When Can You File 2022 Taxes?

by Eric Wright on September 27, 2022

Most recently, the IRS processed 261 million federal returns and collected more than $4 trillion in taxes in a single year. Whenever tax season is upon us, it's important that you have your ducks in a row. This is particularly important if you run any sort of business.

Starting with the basics, it's crucially important that you file your taxes by the deadline each year. Even if you can't pay it all by that date, filing by the deadline keeps you in compliance.

What is the deadline to file business taxes in 2022? What other points of information should I know? We're happy to explain.

Consider the Standard Tax Deadline

Every year, the tax deadline falls on or around April 15. It is typically a few days later if April 15 falls on a holiday or weekend. Businesses had to file 2021 taxes by Monday, April 18.

Determine early on whether you will need a business tax extension or whether you'll be able to hit the deadline.

Account for Estimated Taxes

Many businesses have to make tax payments each quarter. Your quarterly taxes account for an estimated payment for how much you anticipate your total taxes to be.

You will be hit with a penalty if you fail to pay your estimated taxes by the deadline each quarter. In 2022, the estimated tax deadlines are:

  • April 18
  • June 15
  • September 15
  • January 17, 2023

Mark these dates on your tax calendar so that you don't miss a payment. It's simple to pay these taxes online or with the help of a tax professional.

Think About Your Business Designation

The due dates for your taxes also depend on the type of business that you run. Consider your legal filing to know how this affects your taxation status. Your business will likely be a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, S-Corporation, or a Limited Liability Company (LLC).

The date that your business taxes are due will depend on when you close out your tax year. For a partnership, S-Corp, or an LLC, your taxes are due on the 15th day of the third month after you officially close your tax year.

Stay on track with these dates and keep thorough and accurate records throughout the year so that you have an easy time addressing your taxes when the time comes. Make sure to get the appropriate tax forms in order to handle your filing correctly and completely.
